The newspaper says it obtained 29 pages of email records from current Indiana Gov. Private email accounts are usually less secure than government accounts and are not preserved for use in public records in the same way. Pence used the account to communicate with advisers about issues including homeland security in Indiana and the security of the gates at the governor's mansion, The Indianapolis Star reports.

As it stated in Lotter said Pence "maintained a state email account and a personal email account" like previous governors in the state. Vice President Mike Pence used a private email account to conduct public business as Indiana's governor, his spokesman confirmed late Thursday. Emails involving state email accounts are captured on the state's servers, but any emails that Pence may have sent from his AOL account to another private account would need to be retained. The state requires all records pertaining to state business to be retained and available for public information requests. Public officials are not barred from using personal email accounts under Indiana law, but the law is interpreted to mean that any official business conducted on private email must be retained to comply with public record laws.

Pence Used Private Email for Public Business as Governor

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence regularly used personal email to conduct public business while serving as governor of Indiana, his office acknowledged in a statement Friday. "Similar to previous governors, during his time as Governor of Indiana, Mike Pence maintained a state email account and a personal email account," Marc Lotter, the vice president's press secretary, said in an email. The private email account was first reported by the Indianapolis Star, which also reported that the AOL account was compromised last year by hackers. However, the law is generally interpreted to mean that official business conducted over private email must be retained for public record purposes. Indiana law doesn't bar public officials from using personal email accounts, according to the Star.
