Payments company Square launches in the UK quoting : "The Telegraph"

REUTERS/Lucas Jackson/FilesSAN FRANCISCO Square Inc, the payments company led by Twitter Inc Chief Executive Jack Dorsey, has launched in the United Kingdom in its first European foray. Square, which went public in 2015, also operates in the Canada, Japan and Australia, as well as the United States. While the company has largely focused on growing in the United States, startups around the world have launched similar services. Square estimated that, while more shoppers were choosing plastic over cash, about half of the U.K.'s 5.4 million small businesses do not yet take card payments. The San Francisco-based company said on Tuesday that small-and medium-sized businesses in the U.K. would be able to use Square's credit card reader to accept payments on mobile devices.

Jack Dorsey's payments company launches in the UK
Square, the payments company founded by Twitter's Jack Dorsey, has launched in the UK, allowing small businesses to accept cards. Britain is the fifth country Square has launched in since Mr Dorsey founded it in 2009, shortly after he left Twitter. Today, Mr Dorsey is chief executive of both companies, having returned to Twitter in 2015. The company will sell a card reader that connects to a smartphone or tablet and lets merchants accept either chip and pin or contactless transactions. Both Square and Twitter are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Mr Dorsey's dual roles have been questioned given the latter's recent travails.
